(General Practitioner)

Dr Kok was an avid hiker and jungle-trekker. But at the age of 30, she began to experience her first pains, which later turned out to be a mal-tracked patella and loss of cartilage in the big bones of the knee. Combined with the pain of arthritis, she had to give up her physical activities.

As a doctor herself, Dr Kok understood the damage that had occurred to her joints. She knew it was quite extensive (affecting the bone on each side of the joint). There was no real cure and she was just waiting until it was time to do a total knee replacement.

A talk on cartilage renewal and stem cell therapy, however, presented the opportunity of keyhole surgery combined with stem cell treatment. “When Dr Saw told me about the new developments in stem cell therapy (via injections), I went for it straightaway,” she says.

Dr Kok had her first surgery to one knee in July 2007 and the second surgery in January 2008, on the other knee. “I didn’t expect so much physiotherapy and restrictions to my movements,” she admits. But after one year since the first surgery, her left knee “feels quite normal.” Dr Kok is very happy with the results. Her right knee is healing very fast and she hopes to resume her climbing and hiking activities in the near future.
